Muscovite Muscovite mica (hydrous potassium aluminum silicate) is found as sheets or "books" in the metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Piedmont. Micabearing rocks have been mined extensively in Randolph, Cleburne, Clay, Coosa, and Tallapoosa counties.
Vermiculite is mined using open cast mining techniques where the ore is separated from other minerals and then screened or classified into several basic particle sizes. Every care is taken in mining operations to minimize the impact on the environment and to restore land to its natural condition when mining ends.
Mica mining, because of the necessity of keeping the crystals intact, is a delicate operation; drills and blasting powder must be used carefully, if at all. The mined crystals are first "cobbed,", roughly trimmed of rock and cut, then split with a hammer into plates, and further split into sheets with a knife.
Mica minerals are often used as color additives in cosmetics. They also have reflective properties, allowing for a shimmery effect in mineral foundations. Long term inhalation of mica poses a health risk to workers, specifically those working in muscovite (the most common form of mica) mills and other occupations such as agriculture and construction work.
